Project Zomboid server hosting FAQ

What is Project Zomboid?

Project Zomboid is an open-world, isometric zombie survival sandbox by The Indie Stone, set in Knox County, Kentucky. The question isn't whether you'll survive, but how long.

What can you do on a Project Zomboid server?

Run a long-term multiplayer survival world with friends, add Steam Workshop mods, or host a PvE or PvP community server (up to about 32 players recommended).

How much RAM does a Project Zomboid server need?

Project Zomboid servers start at 8 GB, and the configurator suggests 12 GB. Heavily modded servers and more players benefit from 16 GB or more.

How do I add mods?

Add the Workshop item IDs, separated by semicolons, in the Workshop Items setting of your Startup tab; the server downloads them on start. Then add the matching mod IDs to the Mods= line in your server's .ini file using the file manager.

How do players join?

Choose Join, add your server with yourname.play.octopuscloud.org, the port from your dashboard and the server password.

How many players can join?

Set Max Players in Startup settings. Project Zomboid recommends staying at 32 or fewer to avoid desync.

Can I turn PvP off?

Yes. Toggle PvP in your control panel's Startup settings, then restart the server.

I've never run a Project Zomboid server before. Can you help if I get stuck?

Yes. Email support@octopuscloud.org (we aim to reply within a few hours) or ask in our Discord community. Your dashboard shows everything players need to connect, and the control panel gives you a live console, file manager and backups.

Can I change my plan or upgrade later?

Yes. Change RAM, storage, backups, the CPU boost, the hardware tier or the billing cycle from your dashboard. Upgrades apply immediately with a prorated charge; downgrades take effect at the end of your billing period. Switching between DDR4 Budget and DDR5 Premium moves your server to the new hardware for you.

How do I create a Project Zomboid server?

Choose RAM and hardware above and check out. Your server is set up automatically, and you'll find its address, port and password on your dashboard.

How long does setup take?

Setup starts automatically right after checkout. The first start downloads the Project Zomboid server files, so it can take several minutes before players can join; you can follow the progress in the control panel console.

Can I get my money back if I don't like my server?

Payments are generally non-refundable, except where required by law. There's no contract: cancel anytime from your dashboard and keep your server until the end of the period you've paid for. If you think you were charged in error, email support@octopuscloud.org and we'll review it in good faith.

What happens if I cancel?

Your server keeps running until the end of your paid period. After that we keep it and its backups for 30 days, and you can still download your files. Resubscribe within that window and everything is restored as it was. After 30 days it's permanently deleted.

Where are your servers located?

In the Eastern USA. You can test your ping from our homepage.
